Webster Technique Explained: What It Is and Why Pregnant Mamas Are Seeking It Out

If you’ve spent any time in pregnancy circles — online or in real life — you’ve probably heard someone mention the Webster Technique. Maybe your doula mentioned it. Maybe a friend swore by it during her third trimester. Maybe you Googled “chiropractor for pregnancy” and it kept coming up.

So what actually is it — and does it live up to the hype?

What Is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment protocol developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). It was designed specifically for pregnant women and focuses on the sacrum, pelvis, and the soft tissues that connect them.

The goal is to identify and correct what’s called sacral subluxation — a misalignment or dysfunction in the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine) that creates imbalance in the pelvis and tension in the surrounding ligaments and muscles.

Why Does Pelvic Balance Matter During Pregnancy?

Your pelvis is the center of everything during pregnancy. As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, your ligaments loosen under the influence of the hormone relaxin, and your body undergoes extraordinary structural changes week by week.

When the sacrum and pelvis are out of balance, a cascade of effects follows:

  • Tension builds in the round ligaments and uterosacral ligaments — the soft tissue structures that support the uterus
  • The uterus is pulled asymmetrically, which can restrict the space and freedom of movement available to baby
  • Nerve interference can affect the function of the reproductive organs and surrounding structures
  • Mama feels it — in the form of low back pain, hip pain, sciatica, pubic symphysis dysfunction, and general discomfort

Webster Technique care addresses the structural component — the sacral misalignment — and the soft tissue component — the ligament tension — in the same treatment. It is both an adjustment and a soft tissue release, and most mamas feel a noticeable difference after just a few visits.

Does Webster Technique Turn Breech Babies?

This is the most common question we get about Webster, and it deserves a careful, honest answer.

Webster Technique does not manually move or reposition a baby. It is not an external cephalic version (ECV) — that is a separate obstetric procedure performed by a physician.

What Webster Technique does is restore balance to the pelvis and reduce tension in the uterine ligaments, which creates more space and freedom of movement for baby to move and position naturally. When the environment inside the uterus is symmetrical and unrestricted, babies are more able to settle into an optimal position on their own.

The ICPA has published research showing a high rate of favorable fetal positioning in women receiving Webster Technique care. But it is important to understand that chiropractic creates the conditions for optimal positioning — it does not force or guarantee any particular outcome.

What we can tell you from years of clinical experience: mamas who receive consistent Webster care throughout their pregnancies tend to report more comfortable pregnancies, more freedom of movement, and smoother birth experiences. And many have shared stories of babies who had been in less-than-ideal positions finding their way head-down after a course of Webster care.

What Does a Webster Adjustment Feel Like?

Webster care is gentle, specific, and adapted to pregnancy at every stage. We use specialized tables with drop-away sections that allow you to lie comfortably face-down — yes, even well into your third trimester. The sacral adjustment involves a gentle, controlled thrust or low-force instrument technique depending on the patient’s preference and presentation. The soft tissue work involves gentle sustained pressure along the round ligaments.

Most patients find it deeply relieving, especially as pregnancy progresses and pelvic tension builds.

When Should I Start?

We recommend starting Webster care as early in pregnancy as possible — ideally in the first trimester before tension begins to accumulate. That said, we see mamas at every stage and the benefits are meaningful regardless of when you start.

If you are in your third trimester and dealing with discomfort, have a baby in a non-optimal position, or simply want to feel as good as possible heading into birth — it is absolutely not too late.

Is It Safe?

Webster Technique is specifically designed for pregnancy and is considered extremely safe when performed by a certified practitioner. Dr. Stephanie Benz is Webster Technique certified through the ICPA and has provided prenatal chiropractic care throughout hundreds of pregnancies.

If you have questions about whether Webster care is appropriate for your specific pregnancy, we are always happy to talk it through with you before you book.
